Coloured, silk-screened enamels on float glass

Dimensions: 110m2

Fabricator: Proto Studios Ltd, Pewsey, Wiltshire

Installation Date: June 2003

  • As part of the refurbishment of the central Market Hall, Newport City Council commissioned the renewal of the 120m2 east-facing barrel vault window. The new window is thought to be the largest stained glass window in Wales. The installation of the window marks the end of the first phase of a programme of work undertaken by the Newport City Council to update the Market. Together with the window, a new entrance and floor are two other major improvements, following a £1.25 million investment.

  • The window is intended to express the vibrancy of the Market.  The bright and colourful design reflects Newport’s increasing confidence and prosperity, and features a broad scheme of flowers, leaves and the family.  The flowers represent the fresh produce on sale, and suggest the idea of blossoming and blooming.  The leaves repeat the horticultural theme, and float across the design in a progressive pattern, like boats on a river, to suggest trade and commerce.  The animated figures in the lower border represent the human element of the Market, which thrives because of traders and customers.

  • The coloured enamels were silkscreened onto 10mm float glass and then fired and toughened in a kiln at 600°C.  The glass was made by Proto Studios in London, and was installed in June 2003.

  • Councillor Ken Critchely, Cabinet member for Resources at Newport City Council commented, “The window is a real masterpiece which really adds to the ambience of what is already a special building in the city. I hope that this piece of art will draw people into the building.  I’m sure that they will be bowled over by what they see.”
